IIT Kanpur student commits suicide

KANPUR: A third year student of mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) Bhim Singh committed suicide by hanging inside a room in Hall One hostel.Acting director of the institute Professor Manindra Agarwal said the student was from Fridabad and his parents were informed about the incident

KANPUR: A third year mechanical PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) Bhim Singh committed suicide by hanging inside room 107 in Hall No 8 hostel on Wednesday. Acting director of the institute Professor Manindra Agarwal said the student was from Fridabad and his parents were informed about the happening.

He said police had recovered a suicide note from his room and but refused to disclose the content of the note.

Agarwal said the incident came to light late in the evening when a student living in the adjacent room found Bhim’s room locked from inside since morning. They knocked the room but did not get any response. They informed the warden and broke open the door and found Bhim’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.The IIT-K authorities informed the Kalyanpur Police about the incident. The police surrounded the Hostel are and stopped the entry of the students and others to the Hall One.

The incident comes at a time when Professor Abhay Karandikar has taken over charge of the institute as its director today only.
