Tailor ends life by jumping before a moving train

LUCKNOW: A 63-year-old man, Nazar Mohammed, ended his life by jumping before a moving train in Sadar area allegedly due to harassment by police here on Tuesday night. The family members of the deceased have accused a sub-inspector of Thakurganj police station of demanding bribe from the deceased.

The deceased’s wife Khursheed Jahan said that her youngest son Azhar had eloped with a girl from the neighbourh­ood in Shivpuri colony of Thakurganj on April 13. She said a sub-inspector and some constables regularly visited their house and beat up her husband to mount pressure for Azhar’s arrest. “We assured to let them known them on getting any informatio­n about Azhar’s whereabout­s but the subinspect­or demanded ₹1 lakh for not harassing my family,” she alleged.

She said her husband, who ran a tailor shop, gave the cop ₹10,000 and promised to give the remaining amount in two days. She said her husband left the house on Tuesday afternoon telling her that he was going to arrange for the money. “We later received informatio­n that he had committed suicide by jumping before a moving train,” she said.

The victim’s body was found lying on a railway track behind Sadar market area and his identity was ascertaine­d from documents recovered from his clothes. The victim’s brother Mohd Shafiq ascertaine­d his identity. He alleged that his brother committed suicide due to police harassment.

Additional SP (West), Vikas Chandra Tripathi however turned down the allegation­s levelled against the police and said the police team regularly visited the victim’s house to know the whereabout­s of Azhar who is wanted in a girl’s elopement case.
