Major fire at substation, 3rd incident in 4 days

LUCKNOW: A major fire broke out at Ahibaranpu­r power substation in Aliganj which gutted electrical equipment worth several lakhs here on Wednesday afternoon.

This is third such incident in the city within four days.

The smoke billowing out of the site created a flutter among local residents who were forced to rush out of their houses.

The flames were so massive that fire fighters took around five hours to douse the blaze and at least eight fire tenders were pressed into the rescue operation.

Chief fire officer (CFO) AB Pandey said the fire broke out apparently due to short circuit in a transforme­r and spread due to strong winds during the afternoon.

He said the fire gutted several electrical equipments and scrap kept on the substation premises.

He added that the power department staff had been asked to assess the actual loss caused due to the inferno.

PREVIOUS INCIDENTS

▪ April 17: Nearly 100 hutments were reduced to ashes and property worth ₹50 lakh was gutted when fire broke out in a slum in Suggamau village of Indira Nagar area here. Two women were also injured while trying to bring out their belongings from the hutments. The fire broke out from a kitchen in the hutment when a family was cooking food on earthen furnace.

▪ April 15: A three-year old boy died in a raging inferno that gutted a hutment in Baharin Purwa village under Vibhuti Khand police station behind Wave Mall. An illegal LPG refilling shop in the hutment is stated to be the reason behind the blaze.
