MEERUT: Vishal Jangotra, an accused in the rape and murder case of a minor nomadic girl in Kathua (Jammu) in January this year, has failed in his first semester examination of B Sc (agriculture), an official at the Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut, said.

An office superintendent at CCSU, Arshad (he goes by one name), said in two theory papers conducted on January 12 and 15, Vishal got 0 and 2 marks respectively.

Though the official failed to confirm the name of the two papers, he said the subject codes were 192 and 193.

The two papers in which Vishal got lowest marks assume significance as these were conducted at a time when, according to SIT, he had joined the other accused in Jammu to commit the crime.

However, in its charge sheet, the SIT has claimed that Vishal, son of main accused Sanji Ram, arranged a dummy candidate to appear for the examination.

Another university official, not willing to be named, said 11 papers of B Sc (agriculture) were conducted between January 9 and 30 in which Vishal secured a total of 284 marks (in the 11 papers). “Though not mentioned in the mark sheet, it appears that theory and practical papers were of 70 and 30 marks each,” he said.

Meanwhile, Arshad said Vishal’s answer sheets were properly checked before being handed over to the special investigation team (SIT), which visited the university from Jammu on March 23 to collect it as evidence in the case.

The university announced the examination results on Thursday, he said. Vishal is a BSc (first year) student at Akansha College in Meerapur town of Muzaffarnagar which is affiliated to CCS University. He appeared for the examination at KK Jain Degree College in Khatauli (Muzaffarnagar). SIT had earlier arrested Sanji Ram, his minor nephew and a special police officer (SPO) Deepak Khajuria on the complaint of the victim girl’s father. Vishal was arrested from Meerapur. Vishal had claimed that he was appearing for his examination when the Kathua incident took place.
