Kanpur’s ordnance factory excels in making truck mounted guns

-

KANPUR: The Ordnance Factory, Cawnpore (OFC) has developed sophisticated truck mounted guns (TMG) that are better than ones currently used by the country’s defence establishment, said a top official. With this India has become fourth nation after France, Israel and Sweden to excel in making TMGs.

“The TMG was developed under the Make in India programme and will reduce country’s reliance on imports,” said director of ordnance development center (ODC) Rituraj Diwedi. Diwedi said OFC has been in the process of developing the TMG for the past six months and now it has succeeded in designing the barrel. The 150 MM 52 caliber TMG gun was showcased at the international defence expo at Chennai from April 11 to 14, he added. The homemade TMG was superior to the existing TMGs as it has a long range and can attack up to 42 km. It even weighs less and has greater movability. Diwedi said final trial of TMG would be conducted within next two months at Balasore in Odisha. He said Army chief General Vipin Rawat, who visited the Expo, had some high words for the homemade TMG. Besides, foreign defence experts also praised it and one of the most important defence magazines of USA “Jane’s” too highlighted the effectiveness of the TMG.
