LUCKNOW: With the arrest of four youngsters, including a PCS officer’s son, the city police on Saturday claimed to have busted a gang of “spoilt brats” who were involved in robberies at the houses of BJP MLA Ashish Singh’s sister and a retired banker.

Police said the youngsters committed crimes to make a fast buck and lead a lavish life.

Superintendent of police (SP), North, Anurag Vats said, “Those arrested were identified as Shivam Mishra, 23, Adarsh Thakur, 22, Shiva Kant Gupta,19 and Sachin Kashyap, 19. All are from well-to-do families and have good educational backgrounds.”

Vats said Shivam’s father Laxmi Kant Mishra was an administrative officer at the Rampur zila panchayat, Adarsh’s father Ashish Thakur was the president of the village pradhan’s association, Shiva’s father Ram Shankar Gupta was the branch manager of a private firm at Hardoi and Sachin’s father Vinod Kashyap was a big contractor.

“Shivam has done BEd and has also cleared the basic training certificate course. Adarsh and Sachin completed their graduation with good marks. Only Shiva Kant is an intermediate passout,”

said Vats. He said they were involved in two sensational robberies in the state capital.

“The gang committed the first robbery in the house of BJP MLA Ashish Singh’s sister Geeta Singh on the night of March 16. They held Geeta and her husband Sudhir Singh captive after entering their house in Manak Nagar’s Bahadurkheda locality at gunpoint. They collected cash and valuables worth lakhs and fled. Geeta is the principal at a primary school in Hasanganj, Unnao district, while Sudhir is a railways engineer,” the SP informed.

Vats said the same gang was involved in a robbery at an elderly couple’s house. “They held retired bank manager Madan Mohan Mishra and his wife Ratna captive at their house in the State Bank colony in Madiaon on the night of April 4, and fled with cash and valuables worth lakhs,” said the SP, adding that on facing resistance, the gang even thrashed the elderly couple.

Vats said the gang was also involved in four other loots -- in Madiaon, Alambagh, Kakori and Janakipuram -- over the past two months. “The accused were sent to jail and their family members were informed about their arrest. Around Rs 10,000 and various other valuables have been recovered from their possession,” he said.
