LUCKNOW The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now trying to find the missing links in the entire sequence of events in the Unnao rape and murder cases, people familiar with the matter said.

They are interrogating BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is accused of raping a teenage girl in Unnao last year. His brother Arul Singh Sengar and his four aides will be sent to jail on Sunday as their custody remand will end. The MLA’s custody, however, has been extended till April 27.

The teenage victim from Unnao has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her at his house on June 4 last year.

The girl’s father was attacked allegedly by the MLA’s brother and aides on April 3 and sent to jail in an allegedly fake case. He succumbed to his injuries caused in the attack on April 9 in the absence of proper treatment inside the jail.

“We wanted to get the custody of Atul and his aides extended to question him further over missing links but it could not be done due to some legal reasons. The MLA, however, will be questioned further,” said a senior CBI officer privy to the investigation.

He explained CBI teams had questioned the MLA and the other accused, along with the victim and her family, multiple times but there were many contradictions in the sequence of event.

He said a list of missing links was being prepared.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government withdrew the security cover of the MLA soon after an FIR of rape and kidnapping was lodged against him on April 12.

The development had come after the BJP-led governments in the state and the Centre faced criticism over the handling of the Unnao rape and murder cases, which sent shock waves across the country.

The alleged crime grabbed headlines after the rape survivor held protests outside chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s Lucknow residence and attempted self-immolation on April 8. The police too faced criticism for allegedly botching up the initial probe under Sengar’s influence.
