IRS officer tops UPSC 2017, DU student bags second spot

NEWDELHI: A serving Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS), Durishetty Anudeep, from Telangana has emerged topper in the civil services 2017 examinatio­n. There are eight women among the top 25 candidates. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared results late on Friday.

In all, 990 candidates — 750 men and 240 women — have been recommende­d by the Commission for appointmen­t to various central government services, including the prestigiou­s Indian Administra­tive Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFS). Among them there are 29 physically challenged persons, including nine orthopedic­ally challenged, eight visually challenged and 12 hearing impaired.

A government statement said topper Anudeep belongs to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category and qualified the exam with anthropolo­gy as an optional subject. Last year’s topper Nandini KR also was from the OBC category. Anudeep is a 2014 batch IRS officer.

“He graduated with BE (Electronic­s & Instrument­ation) degree from BITS, Pilani,” added the statement.

Anu Kumari, who secured second rank, graduated with BSc (Hons) in Physics from Delhi University and did her MBA (finance & marketing) from IMT, Nagpur.

“Technicall­y this was my second attempt but I consider it as my first only because I could not prepare at all last time. I’m glad that I cleared it this time or next year would have been my last attempt due to the age limit,” said Anu Kumari, 31, mother of a fouryear-old boy. Following Anudeep and Anu Kumari in the list are Sachin Gupta, Atul Prakash, Pratham Kaushik, Koya Sree Harsha, Ayush Sinha, Anubhav Singh, Saumya Sharma and Abhishek Surana, it added.
