In a first, women cops to wear tunics instead of shirts
ALLAHABAD/LUCKNOW: In a move aimed at gender sensitisation , non-gazetted women cops across the state will now wear tunics instead of shirts.
It is the first time that a gender specific ‘Khaki’ uniform has been introduced in the state. The uniform has been designed keeping in mind the comfort and requirement of women cops, said additional director general (ADG) of police headquarters in Allahabad, BP Jogdand.
“The order issued by the state government secretary OP Verma reads that the shirt
will be like a tunic and its length will be a few inches above the knee (till the length of their arms when they stand in attention mode),” said a senior police official at Allahabad police headquarters.
“While no changes have been made in the pants, the shirt has been designed in a way that it is more comfortable and attractive than the earlier one, ” said an officer quoting the government order issued by the state home department on Wednesday.
They will wear half-sleeved shirts in summer and fullsleeved ones in winter. Designed like a tunic, the shirt will be double-collared with
four pockets.
It will have four loops for a belt. Their belt will be made of cloth or ‘newad’ and have a buckle with the logo of Uttar Pradesh police.
The changes were suggested by Allahabad police
headquarters following the recommendations given at the 7th National Conference of Women in Police, in January 2016.
ADG Jogdand said the recommendations were forwarded to the state government after being endorsed by the UP DGP on November 8, 2017. The government has issued the order on the same recommendations and it is being forwarded to all the senior authorities concerned. A copy of the order has been forwarded to all ADGs, including ADG (establishment), inspector general of police (IG) of different zones besides the district police chiefs.
Welcoming the change, SHO Atarsuiya police station Anshul Pandey said the new uniform is aimed at making the police force a smart one. “The design is attractive, but the tunic looks heavier than the usual shirts. However, it will be very comfortable to wear in winter.”
The move comes days after the UP police department changed the design of caps worn by constables across the state. According to the new directive, head constables and constables posted in all divisions of police department would compulsorily wear khaki woollen beret caps instead of folding caps.
