Pranav Goyal of Chandigarh tops JEE Advanced
KANPUR: Pranav Goyal, 17, of Chandigarh on Sunday topped the JEE Advanced 2018, the examination held for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) .
Pranav secured All India Rank (AIR) 1, scoring 337 out of 360 in the examination.
Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) had conducted exam on May 20 this year for all the 23 IITs across the country. Sahil Jain from Bundi in Rajasthan stood second in the examination. He topped the IIT-Delhi zone, scoring 326 marks out of 360. Kailash Gupta from Delhi ranked third.
Meenal Parekh from Kota in Rajasthan, who ranked 6th scoring 318 out of 360 in the examination, topped among women.
Toppers in other categories included Mavuri Siva Krishna Manohar of Vijaywada (OBC), Aayush Kadam (SC), Jatoth Siva Tarun (ST), Manan Goyal (persons with disability), Virendra Kumar (OBC-non-creamy layerperson with disability) and Raushan Kumar (SC-person with disability).
SC category topper Aayush Kadam, who bagged AIR-6, topped IIT-Kanpur zone while Harshita Boonlia with common rank list (CRL) 470 topped among women in Kanpur zone.
Other toppers of Kanpur zone included Samyak Jain (CRL 147), Himansh Rathore (CRL 165), Pranshu S Negi (CRL 190) and Vaidic Jain (CRL 197).
Toppers of other zones included Rishi Agarwal (IITBombay; CRL 8), Sahil Jain (IITDelhi; CRL 2), Prashant Kumar (IIT-Guwahati; CRL 150), KVR Hemant Kumar Chodipilli (IITKharagpur; CRL 7), Mavuri Siva Krishna Manohar (IIT-Madras; CRL 5) and Pranav Goel (IITRoorkee; CRL 1).
Chairman of the JEE-2018 Prof Shalabh said a total of 1,55,158 candidates had appeared for both the first and second papers of JEE Advanced out of which 18,138 qualified the examination. “Of the total qualified candidates, 2,076 are girls and 16,062 are boys. About 8,794 general, 3,140 OBC, 4,709 SC and 1,495 ST category candidates qualified JEE Advanced,” he added. Prof Shalabh said the highest number of 5,072 candidates qualified from IIT-Delhi zone while 3,595 from IIT-Madras zone, 2,936 from IITBombay zone, 2,160 from IIT-Kanpur zone and 1,736 from IIT-Kharagpur zone cleared the examination.
Sharing his future plans, JEE Advanced topper Pranav said he wanted to be an entrepreneur.
“My next aim is to take admission to IIT-Mumbai. After that, I will pursue MBA and go for entrepreneurship. My father is my inspiration and my role model. He has supported me throughout my career. Following him, I too want to be a successful entrepreneur.”
An alumnus of Bhavan Vidyalaya in Panchkula, Pranav was on his way to Hyderabad with his family when the results were declared on Sunday.
He had scored 97.2% in the CBSE Class 12 exams in non-medical and had All India Rank 4 in the JEE Mains, scoring 350 out of 360 marks.
Pranav, son of business couple Pankaj Goyal and Mamta Goyal, said: “If you focus well, your study hours won’t really matter. So just stay focussed, maintain balance and be calm. Have faith in your teachers and their guidance, and always ensure that your knowledge is conceptually sound.”
“Solving previous year papers helped me a lot in getting an insight into the pattern of the examination,” Pranav said. He used to study five hours every day and had devoted the entire year in studying for the JEE Advanced.
“Clearing the JEE Advanced was the target, so I studied for it throughout the year and prepared for the Mains, a month before the exam,” he said.
Rejoicing Pranav’s success, his father said, “My son has always been a topper and has worked hard to achieve this rank. We are very happy with his performance.”
His mother said, “My son has proved that with hard work, anybody can reach the sky. I am really proud of him.”
His teachers also expressed happiness over the performance.
This was the first-ever completely computer-based Joint Entrance Examination.
The next step is the admission process for the IITs, Indian School of Mines, and National Institutes of Technology. The allotment of seats is expected to start from June 27.
The final allotment for the seventh round will be announced on July 18.
