PAAN LOVERS FINED FOR LITTERING
VARANASI: Fond of Banarasi paans, enjoy it. But please don’t throw away the wrappers on the street or you may be slapped a fine of ₹100 or more and challaned as well. Launching a drive on Wednesday to keep an effective check on throwing of the wrappers around the paan shops and paper plates around road side eateries, Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) slapped a penalty on 50 such persons and also ensured legal action. City health officer at VMC AK Dubey said, “Financial penalty was slapped on 46 persons for littering around paan shops, road side eateries and sweet shops. Many of them threw mahuaa leaves or paper, which are used to pack the paan, around the paan shops.” A fine of ₹8350 was recovered from them, Dubey said. While some of them were fined ₹100, others were fined ₹250 or more. Dubey said the drive to identify and fine such people will continue. “Enjoy paan, but please throw the wrapper into the dustbin so that streets, lanes, public places remain clean,” Dubey appealed to the citizens.
