VARANASI: Fond of Ba­narasi paans, en­joy it. But please don’t throw away the wrap­pers on the street or you may be slapped a fine of ₹100 or more and chal­laned as well. Launch­ing a drive on Wednesday to keep an ef­fec­tive check on throw­ing of the wrap­pers around the paan shops and pa­per plates around road side eater­ies, Varanasi Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion (VMC) slapped a penalty on 50 such per­sons and also en­sured le­gal ac­tion. City health of­fi­cer at VMC AK Dubey said, “Fi­nan­cial penalty was slapped on 46 per­sons for lit­ter­ing around paan shops, road side eater­ies and sweet shops. Many of them threw mahuaa leaves or pa­per, which are used to pack the paan, around the paan shops.” A fine of ₹8350 was re­cov­ered from them, Dubey said. While some of them were fined ₹100, oth­ers were fined ₹250 or more. Dubey said the drive to iden­tify and fine such peo­ple will con­tinue. “En­joy paan, but please throw the wrap­per into the dust­bin so that streets, lanes, pub­lic places re­main clean,” Dubey ap­pealed to the cit­i­zens.
