300 paddlers for state junior championsh­ip

LUCKNOW : Over 300 young paddlers would be seen in action in the three-day 33rd Junior UP State Table Tennis UP Cup Championsh­ip, beginning Friday in Ghaziabad.

Singles events for boys/girls, sub-junior boys/girls and cadet boys/girls would be played. Internatio­nal umpires Rahul Prakash and Sanjay Tandon have been named as referee and asstt. Referee.

NOMINATED

Parag Agarwal of LIC of India’s Lucknow has been nominated as coach for the junior India table tennis team, camp of which is happening at Patiala till June 27. The team will then take part in the Junior Asian Table Tennis Championsh­ips. Parag has recently completed ITTF level 3 coaching course at Indore. He was appointed coach of Indian junior team for the ITTF World Junior Circuit and had coached Indian youth team at the Youth Olympic qualificat­ion held at Greater Noida last year.

OPEN CHESS

An Open Chess Tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday here. The tournament will be played under Swiss system and FIDE rules in six rounds. Total prize fund of Rs 5100 will be distribute­d among top ten prize winners in open category and trophies will be distribute­d among top three winners in open, under-16 and under-12 categories.

Opener Rahul smashed 86-ball 100 with the help of 17 hits to the fence as KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium Trainees XI crushed Panthers Cricket Academy by 129 runs in a league match of the CAL’s under-14 cricket tournament, at the Chowk Stadium here on Thursday.

The winners made 198 in 34.3 overs while batting first after winning the toss, and then skittled out rivals for paltry 69 with four bowlers sharing eight wickets between them. In other matches of the day, LDA Coaching Centre beat New Light Cricket Club by four wickets, whereas Kalpana Sports Foundation beat Jaipuria Cricket Academy by 28 runs.

UP’s Ayaz Sheikh has been selected in the Indian sailing team for the Asian Sailing Championsh­ip to be held at Jakarta. Ayaz, who hails from Julie Mir village of Gosaiiganj Tehsil of Sultanpur district, was preparing for the championsh­ip in Mumbai.
