GHAZIABAD: A 36-year-old man was shot dead and another severely injured after two unidentified bikers fired at a Santro car in a case of suspected road rage late Sunday in Sahibabad. The police have lodged a case of murder and attempt to murder against the unidentified assailants who fled the spot.

According to victims, they were driving back from Gurugram to Baghpat when two bikers stopped their car near Panchsheel Colony, adjacent Koyal Enclave, near Bhopra in Sahibabad. The three men in the car were identified as Jitendra, 36, and his friends Gyanendra, 39, and Lalit, 38. Lalit is the chief of Bhaidapur village in Baghpat and the only one who escaped the gunfire. “The pillion rider banged on our car with his hand and asked us to stop. Gyanendra, who was driving the car, asked him why. The biker replied that we should be careful while driving. Gyanendra, on seeing that the two bikers were under the influence of alcohol, apologised, hoping to end the matter. Suddenly, the pillion rider got down and came towards the car,” Lalit said.

the pillion rider fired four shots at the car. The shots hit Jitendra who succumbed to injuries at the hospital while Gyanendra is admitted to a multi-specialty hospital in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi. The incident took place around 10.50pm and no PCR vans were present nearby. I can identify the two men as they were not wearing helmets,” Lalit said. Jitendra, a father of three minor children, was from Chirori in Loni while Gyanendra is from Dagarpur in Baghpat. Although Lalit says the incident took place around 10.50pm, the FIR states the time of the incident as 8.30pm. The police have said that it could be a case of road rage but they are probing other angles as well.

“The gunshots weren’t heard by vendors and shopkeepers nearby. We are scanning the CCTV footage from the area to carry out a thorough investigation in the case,” Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police, Ghaziabad, said.
