Local golfer Vijay to aim for top finish

LUCKNOW : Former Indian Open champion and Lucknow’s own Vijay Kumar would be hoping for top finish in the three-day PGTI’s fifth Feeder Tour season, starting Wednesday, at the Lucknow Golf Club here. The event carries a prize purse of Rs eight lakh. The sixth edition of the tour will also be played at a different location in Lucknow itself after this event.

Vijay, who hails from local Martinpurw­a area adjacent to the 18-hole golf course, though made cuts in all the four previous events of the season, he had his best at Delhi where at the BSF Golf Course he finished seventh and fetched a purse of Rs 24,020.

This was followed by 19th place finish at Faridabad, 22nd place finish at Karnal and finally 18th place finish at Jaipur last week.

The tournament, which returns to the Lucknow Golf Club after four years will have a rich field of 72 players. The event would be played over three rounds of 18 holes each with the cut being applied after 36 holes. Finally, the 36 players will make the cut after two rounds.

Other than Vijay, top profession­als from Lucknow like Manoj Kumar, Rajesh Kumar Rawat, Amardeep Rawat, Ashish Kumar Gupta, Rishi Kumar, Bhoop Singh and Hari Ram too would be seen in action. But the attention would be on Delhi’s Pawan Kumar and Ashbeer Saini of Kapurthala as the two are placed second and third on the Feeder Tour Order of Merit, respective­ly.

SRIJA, ALKA IN FINAL

Srija defeated Chaitanya Singh Lodhi 11-2, 11-4 to set up a title clash with Alka Arya, who defeated Anusha Pandey 11-1, 11-4 in the girls under-19 singles at the Junior Badminton Championsh­ip here on Tuesday. Aishani Singh outplayed Ananya Singh 11-3, 11-8 to make it to the girls under-11 final, whereas in the boys under-9 semis Ateeq beat Atharv Tewari 11-7, 11-8.

LDACC WIN

LDACC scored a convincing 39-run win against Divine Cricket Club and collected full points in the 2nd Aryavart Trophy Cricket Tournament, at the

Pt Raas Bihari Tewari Stadium here on Tuesday. After scoring 244 for five in 40 overs, LDACC got the rivals out for 205 in 37.4 overs. Rohit took 3/45, whereas Anirudh and Manoj shared four wickets between them. BRIEF SCORES LDACC 244 for 5 in 40

Lucknow District Basketball Associatio­n would be conducting school and college league soon. Students born on or after January 1, 2001 are eligible to participat­e. Entry closes with DBA chief SB Singh by July 8.

Cricket Associatio­n Lucknow on Tuesday announced its list of 18 cricketers, who would be attending the under-19 trial matches at the Kamla Club in Kanpur from July 8 to 13. More details can be had from the CAL office.

Young Mukul Lodhi caused the only upset on the second day of the AITA Talent Series here on Tuesday as she defeated eight seed Shourya Jain 4-1, 4-0 in straight sets, at the SDS Tennis Academy

Playing aggressive­ly from the very start of play in an under-12 encounter, Mukul conceded just one game in the first set. But in the second set, seeded Jain failed to handle Mukul’s forehand and backhand volleys.
