LU violence: HC summons DGP, SSP, vice-chancellor

Nearly 300 teachers attend LUTA meeting, say the university campus is not yet safe for them to resume work

LUCKNOW:Taking suo motu cognisance of the violence that broke out at the University of Lucknow in which the proctor and 11 teachers sustained injuries, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday issued summons to senior police and university officials.

The division bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan observed: “It is unfortunat­e and extremely painful that the students have the courage, audacity and boldness to enter the premises from where they have been expelled and attack the vice chancellor, teachers of the university and staff of the university.”

LU chief proctor Vinod Singh and others had suffered injuries on Wednesday when a group of around 25 people – mostly students expelled from the institutio­n – pelted them with stones on the campus. The LU had decided to close down for an indefinite period and suspend its admission process in the wake of the attack.

Soon after HC took cognizance of LU vandalism, DGP OP Singh transferre­d circle officer, Mahanagar, Anurag Singh and suspended LU police outpost in-charge Pankaj Mishra. A dele- gation comprising LU vice-chancellor and teachers also met him.

The Lucknow police have arrested three people allegedly involved in the violence. The DGP said inspector general of police,Lucknow range, Sujeet Pandey had been asked to conduct a detailed inquiry into the violence and lapses on the part of the police.The bench summoned LU vice-chancellor Prof SP Singh, proctor Vinod Singh, registrar SK Shukla, UP director general of police OP Singh and Lucknow SSP Deepak Kumar to appear before it and present the details of the incident.

The court also observed that the copy of the Hindustan Times daily published from Lucknow be made part of the record. “We accordingl­y direct that this may be registered as a Public Interest Litigation titled ‘Lucknow University Vandalism’”, the court said. The court observed: “We require the presence of the vice chancellor, the registrar and the proctor of the Lucknow University before the court for providing necessary assistance.”

“Further we require the presence of the director general of police, UP, and the senior superinten­dent of police, Lucknow to inform the Court about the steps taken when the university authoritie­s first informed about the likelihood of the incident taking place and also the steps taken after the incident had taken place,” the HC said.

LUCKNOW: Faculty members at the University of Lucknow on Thursday decided that they would not resume admission and evaluation work till the 25 boys who attacked teachers on the campus were arrested.

The Lucknow University Teachers’ Associatio­n (LUTA), in its emergency general body meeting, resolved that they would not return to work unless the expelled students who attacked teachers were arrested.

They also demanded that the cops who allegedly did not take prompt action during the incident should be removed.

Expressing solidarity with varsity teachers, associatio­n of degree college teachers decided that admission work would remain suspended in all degree colleges on Friday, said Manoj Pandey, president of LU Associated College Teachers’ Associatio­n (Luacta).

“The meeting saw participat­ion of nearly 300 teachers where all teachers unanimousl­y said the campus is not yet safe for them to resume work,” said Durgesh Srivastava, LUTA general secretary.

LUTA office-bearers briefed the V-C about their decision. The V-C informed teachers that DGP OP Singh had sent a few senior cops for dialogue.

The teachers’ delegation met cops who assured them of providing security and urged teachers to resume work, but they refused.

The DGP assured teachers of all help and asked them to resume admission work. LUTA general secretary Durgesh Srivastava said it was communicat­ed to DGP that the decision of not resuming was taken at the general body meeting of teachers.

“We will now wait for HC proceeding­s as the court has summoned the V-C and DGP. LUTA general body will meet again at 12:30 pm on Friday to decide their future course of action,” said Durgesh.
