Gorakhpur: A social activist has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that the authorities at Deendayal Upadhyay University, Gorakhpur, ignored reservation rule in the appointment of 128 teachers in 22 departments.

In a complaint made online to the Prime Minister’s office (PMO), social activist Rajan Yadav aka Arthi Baba sought scrapping of the appointments of 128 teachers. The university authorities have, however, refuted the allegations.

He said the appointment had been made in two phases – first of 56 teachers in 10 departments between March 22 and April 28, and then of 72 teachers in 12 departments on Monday.

“Of the total 72 teachers appointed on Monday on the recommendation of selection committee

Of the 72 teachers appointed on Monday, the highest 52 are from general category, 10 are OBCs and 9 from SC/ST categories.

to working the council, the highest 52 are from general category, 10 are OBCs and 9 from SC/ST categories. This is against the rule of 49.5% reservation to SC ST and OBCs. I have complained to the PM requesting him to scrap the appointments and order a probe into the irregularities,” said Yadav.

Out of the total 128 appointments in two phases, 81 were general while 47 belonged to SC/ST and OBC categories.

Prof Ajay Gupta, a member of the executive council of the university, also said the merit marks of selected candidates were not announced by the university which was against the norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Dr Durga Yadav, a former part-time teacher at the department of geography at DDU university who is fighting for reservation rights of backwards and dalits, said: “Reservation rules for appointments are not being followed in appointment of lecturers at Gorakhpur university. Upper caste candidates are given priority.”

Dismissing allegations of irregularities, registrar, DDU Gorakhpur university, Shatrohan Vaishya said a similar plea was made in the high court which was rejected by the court. “If anyone has objection to the selection process, he should come to us. We will look into the matter,” he said.
