UP SC/ST panel issues notice to AMU on quota issue
LUCKNOW: The UP Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration regarding alleged non-compliance of reservation rules at the institution.
The Commission has asked the AMU registrar to submit a reply by August 8 failing which senior officers of the university would be summoned and a case would be registered against the university authorities for denying reservation benefits to SC/ST candidates.
Addressing a press conference, chairman, UP SC/ST Commission, Brij Lal said the Commission had received complaints from various dalit organisations that AMU had denied benefits of reservation to the students of the SC/ST category.
“The Commission had issued a notice to AMU seeking an explanation as to why the reservation granted by the Constitution to SC/ST students has not been implemented in the university. The Commission has asked the university under which circumstances the reservation rules were not implemented as no Supreme Court order has asked the AMU administration to not to give benefit of reservation to SC/ST candidates,” he said.
Brij Lal said besides the orders of the Supreme Court, proceedings of the parliament and the Constitution, the Commission also studied the Act under which the AMU was established.
