SRINAGAR: A day after Union home minister, Rajnath Singh and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval reviewed the security situation in Srinagar, the body of a police constable who was abducted by militants in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday night was found on Friday .

The policeman has been identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar, 27. His bullet-riddled body was recovered around eight kilometres away from his house on the roadside in Kulgam district. Dar was abducted around 9.30 on Wednesday night, just 10 -12 meters away from his house near a medical shop. According to his family, Dar, who was once a personal security officer to former senior superintendent of police (SSP) Shopian, Shailendra Mishra, had gone to meet Mishra hours before his abduction.

Officials said that it seems that militants had prior information about his presence in the village and it is being verified whether the police constable had followed the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

“He (Javaid Ahmad) had gone to fetch some medicine from a medical shop just outside his home. It seems militants were waiting for him, they abducted him and put him in a car and sped from the place,’’ said Shabir Ahmad, a relative of the slain constable.

“Within minutes the family came to know about the abduction and they informed the police. The family could not sleep for entire night and waited for his news. However, in the morning police informed them about his killing. Once they were told about killing, they were all shattered,’’ he said.

Soon after the abduction, a shirtless picture of police constable started making rounds on the social networking sites, apparently, the pictures were posted by the militants on the social media.

Senior superintendent of police, Shopian, Sandeep Choudhary said that on Thursday night police received information that constable Javaid was abducted a few meters away from his house. “After abduction of cop, some pictures of the abducted constable started circulating on the social media,’’ he said adding that in the morning body of constable was recovered from neighbouring Kulgam district around eight kilometres from the place from where he was abducted.
