LUCKNOW: Hours after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court hauled up the police on Friday for the July 4 violence at the University of Lucknow (LU), the varsity spokesperson assured the students coming for admission that the campus was a ‘safe and secure place’ for studying and pursuing an academic career.

“There is no room for hooliganism and vandalism in the university. No indiscipline will be tolerated. The university is taking all measures to ensure a secure and conducive academic atmosphere,” said University of Lucknow spokesperson NK Pandey.

This university administration’s statement came as a surprise for many teachers.

Till Friday afternoon, the Lucknow University Teachers’ Association (LUTA) in its general body meeting was highlighting the fact that the campus was unsafe for both students and teachers till the time the hooligans who thrashed staffers on Wednesday were arrested and sent to jail.

Pandey said the first meeting of the district administration coordination committee and LU officials for enhancing campus security would be held on campus at 4:30 pm on Saturday.

The law and order situation at LU took a beating yet again on Wednesday, when a group, comprising mostly of expelled students, attacked teachers, leaving many of them injured.

In response, the University of Lucknow administration had decided to close down the varsity for an indefinite period of time.

The university also suspended admissions to its postgraduation courses as well as the evaluation process.

However, now after high court’s intervention, varsity officials are hopeful that the police would play a proactive role in checking troublemakers on the campus and preventing incidents of violence.
