Is it difficult to apologise? It is often the person’s ego that prevents one from saying, “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” But asking for forgiveness is a powerful quality because it reveals the tolerant nature of a person and this fosters respect. If you do not believe in forgiveness you are actually holding on to anger and that is an adverse quality.

Unforgiving people may feel they have been victimised which only increases resentment and anger. Forgiveness, however, releases these feelings.

The phrase, ‘forgive and forget,’ sounds nice but it is difficult to forget the bitterness you have endured. Despite those unhappy memories you could have suffered, it still demonstrates your maturity when you say, “I’m so sorry, I should never have spoken like that to you. Even if you do not accept my apology, I will continue to think of you in the highest esteem.”

Can you make an enemy of a person for the rest of your life? This kind of a situation seldom happens in life. It did happen with the Montague and Capulet families, but that was a Shakespeare play, not the real life.

Forgiveness, therefore, sets you free and enables you to make peace with the past. Your friendships will become stronger, providing you with happiness. The crux of the matter is that by nurturing a forgiving quality, you recognise your own faults, and it enables you to forgive others’ faults.
