LUCKNOW: In a special ‘Gau Raksha Bandhan’ celebration here on Sunday, Muslim women will tie rakhis to cows at the Lord Shiva temple near Kudiya Ghat in Rumi gate area.

To encourage Muslims to protect cows, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bukkal Nawab is organising the event.

“For me, cow protection is a priority. ‘Gau raksha’ is important. The time has come for us to save our holy cows,” said Bukkal Nawab, a minister in the former Samajwadi Party government who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after it came to power in the state last year.

Nawab stressed on the need to take out cow protection rallies in every village of the country, to educate the poor and the farmers on the significance of rearing cows for social, economic, religious, environment and health benefits.

When asked if he was organising the ‘gau raksha bandhan’ only for publicity, Nawab said, “My father Dara Nawab (pilot) constructed a Shiva temple in 1994 and my family practises the best of both Hinduism and Islam.”

To recall, this year, Nawab had donated a 30kg bell to the Hanuman temple in Hazratganj on Bada Mangal.

“My wish has been fulfilled by Lord Hanuman. I had taken a pledge that if my wish was fulfilled, I would offer a bell at Hanumanji’s temple,” he had said after donating the bell.

However, he did not disclose his wish.
