Juniors clinch two gold medals, seniors disappoint at world shooting
CHANGWON:India began their campaign in the ISSF World Championship with two gold medals in the junior section but senior team shooters failed to reach the finals of their events here on Sunday.
The tournament assumes significance as it is the first quota event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, offering as many as 60 berths. Arjun Singh Cheema won the individual junior men’s 50m pistol gold and then led his team, also comprising Gaurav Rana and Anmol Jain, to the team gold in the event. In the mixed team 10m air rifle, Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar shot 835.6 to finish seventh. In the mixed team air pistol event, Heena Sidhu and Shahzar Rizvi shot 768 to end 10th. The second Indian pair of Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma shot 767 to finish 12th.
LAHIRI MISSES CUT
BOSTON: Anirban Lahiri carded two-over 71 in the second round at the Dell Technologies Championships in the second leg of FedExCup play-offs on Saturday to miss the cut. The ace Indian golfer had carded three-over in the first round. The poor first round had pegged him back. His driving accuracy was just over 57% on the first day and even though he did find the greens almost two-thirds of the time, he was always beyond 20 feet and very rarely inside that to get a birdie. Tiger Woods was 4-under for two days at tied 21st.
EB HOLD BAGAN
KOLKATA: Defending champions East Bengal pulled back from a two-goal deficit to hold Mohun Bagan 2-2 in the local league derby at a packed Saltlake Stadium on Sunday. Bagan struck through Pintu Mahata and Henry Kisseka inside 30 minutes to dominate the proceedings. But just before the change over, Costa Rican World Cupper Johnny Acosta made his presence felt to pull one back, while Laldanmawia Ralte got the equaliser in the 60th minute in front of 65,000plus crowd. The result meant that East Bengal are yet to win in last seven derbies.
