ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad high court on Wednesday directed the state government to file within two weeks the progress report of probe into the murder case of retired policeman Abdul Samad Khan in Allahabad on Monday. The court also directed the registry of court to register the case as public interest litigation (PIL).

Appearing for the state government, additional advocate general (AAG) Manish Goel informed the court that all the accused who were seen assaulting the retired sub-inspector in the CCTV footage had been arrested. He said out of 10 accused named in the FIR, seven had been arrested.

The court said it had noted that in sensitive cases public prosecutors did not oppose the bail application of the accused and many a times gave their consent to such pleas. On Tuesday, the court had asked the state government to inform it about the action taken so far in the case.

The bench comprising chief justice DB Bhosale and justice Yashwant Varma passed the order after taking suo motu cognizance of the incident.

On September 3, Khan was beaten by three men with sticks and rods in Shivkuti area of Allahabad. The accused attacked Khan until he fell unconscious. The incident was caught in a CCTV camera nearby.

Later, his family members and police took him to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Khan’s family claimed that they had a land dispute with a kin.
