Knee replacement: Choose implant wisely, say experts
LUCKNOW : If undergoing a knee replacement at a young age, one should choose the implant wisely to ensure it was long lasting and left scope for revision surgery, said experts on the sidelines of the 4th Prof US Mishra Memorial Medical Education Programme organised at Healthcity Hospital on Thursday.
“Good infrastructure, expert surgeon and correct choice of implant collectively make the life of a patient undergoing knee replacement better,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director Healthcity Hospital. “Since majority of the young patients requires revision surgery later in life, a surgeon needs to ensure revision surgery is doable,” he said. Dr Sandeep Garg, director of Healthcity hospital, said that patients as young as 25 years underwent knee replacement due to diseases such as osteoarthritis and joint bone loss caused by incorrect lifestyle. “The case of a 25-year-old patient will be different from that of a 65-year-old,” said Dr Garg.
Doctors said that the decision by the union government to cap prices of implants had reduced the cost of joint replacement surgeries. “For example, the implant that cost ₹2 lakh now comes for ₹60,000, so the cost of surgery has also come down,” said Dr Kapoor while appreciating the government’s decision. Dr Kapoor and Dr Garg have been doing replacement surgeries for the past over 20 years.
On Friday, Dr Philip Hirst from Manchester, UK will be the foreign guest faculty in the CME and will answer queries of the participating surgeons. The hands on training will be coordinated by Dr Pulkit Singh and a live surgery will be done by Dr Kapoor and Dr Garg.
