MEERUT : Police have registered a case against 18 people who manhandled two students of Meerut Medical College—a Muslim youth and a Hindu girl— here on Wednesday.

The case was registered at Medical police station on the complaint of sub-inspector Pramod Kumar in which 18 people have been named and others are unknown. They have been charged for hurting religious sentiments, thrashing, abusing and attacking the Muslim male student after barging into his house on Sunday where he was studying with a Hindu female classmate. However, there is no mention of the names of Hindu outfits which these accused are associated with despite the fact that a few of them identified themselves in videos as belonging to VHP and other Hindu outfits, said sources.

SP city Ranvijay Singh said that a case has been registered against those who were involved in the entire episode and investigation is still underway to identify which organisations they are associated with.

Meanwhile, SSP Akhilesh Kumar has ordered an enquiry against the police officials who used foul language for the girl student while taking her to the police station in their vehicle. A woman constable is seen slapping her and removing the cloth wrapped around her face.SSP suspended three cops and a homeguard after a video of the incident vent viral on Tuesday but no case was registered against them. “Adequate action will be initiated against errant cops after receiving the enquiry report,” said Singh.

Meanwhile, the victim girl student claimed that the cops pressurised her to implicate her classmate in fake rape case for her release from police station.

The girl is a student of nursing course in Meerut Medical College who had gone to take laptop from his Muslim classmate in Jagriti Vihar locality on Sunday when a group of Hindu activists barged into the house and manhandled them. They accused the boy of involving in ‘love jihad’ and brought the duo to the police station.
