The situation was normal on Saturday, senior superintendent of police Sureshrao Anand Kulkarni said.
The stone pelting erupted after an altercation between the youths of the two communities at a paan (betel leaf) shop near a railway crossing in the locality under Adampur police station.
The altercation took an ugly turn when some people manhandled a youth.
Soon, people from both sides gathered at the spot and resorted to heavy stone-pelting, police said.
