VARANASI : Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel were deployed in Kazzakpura area of Varanasi after at least nine people sustained minor injuries in stone-pelting between two groups belonging to different communities on Friday night, police said.

The situation was normal on Saturday, senior superintendent of police Sureshrao Anand Kulkarni said.

The stone pelting erupted after an altercation between the youths of the two communities at a paan (betel leaf) shop near a railway crossing in the locality under Adampur police station.

The altercation took an ugly turn when some people manhandled a youth.

Soon, people from both sides gathered at the spot and resorted to heavy stone-pelting, police said.

A police team reached the spot and tried to placate both the groups, which were not ready to relent.

District magistrate Surendra Singh and the SSP reached the spot and with heavy force and brought the situation under control.

The SSP said, “Additional police force has been deployed in the area as a preventive measure.”

He said the injuries sustained by people in the clash were minor and they were rushed to hospital immediately.

Some anti-social elements who tried to give the incident a communal colour would be identified and action would be taken against them, he said.
