Girls to sweep medal list

-

LUCKNOW : Girls will again sweep the medal list at the 61st convocation of Lucknow University (LU) to be held on Tuesday morning. They will bag 149 of the 192 medals, an official said.

Prof Dhirendra Pal Singh, chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) will be the chief guest on the occasion.

The university will give away 31,607 degrees, of which 20,286 will go to girl students and 11,321 to boys, said LU spokesperson Prof NK Pandey. A dress rehearsal of the ceremony was organised on Monday, he said.

This year the university will not confer the Chancellor’s Gold Medal as the LU administration did not find any suitable candidate for coveted honour. “In the 100-year-old history of the university, it will be for the first time that this prized medal will not be

given,” said an LU official.

“After a thorough interview of candidates, we did not come across any suitable candidate for the Chancellor’s Gold Medal (that is given to a candidate for being the best student in all faculties). The sanctity of the medal cannot be compromised with. Hence, it was resolved that this medal will not be given away this year,” said Pandey.

The Vice Chancellor’s gold medal will also not be awarded at the convocation this year as university officials didn’t find anyone suitable for the medal, which is awarded to the best NCC candidate of Lucknow University and its affiliated colleges.

The two Chancellor’s silver medals will be awarded to Sachin Singh and Chaitanya Rathore.

Chaitanya was selected for taking part in the Republic Day parade at Rajpath in Delhi and being a part of the Swachh Bharat internship while Sachin was selected for doing social works. Dr Chakraborty’s Gold Medal will be conferred upon Anchal Saxena.
