In Allahabad, Sonia inaugurate­s beam radiation machine

ALLAHABAD : United Progressiv­e Alliance (UPA) chairperso­n and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi dedicated a state-of-theart true beam radiation machine for treatment of cancer patients at a new building of the Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital (KNMH) here on Wednesday. She also performed the bhumipujan of a new block that is set to come up in the hospital premises, said Dr B Paul Thaliath, additional director of the regional cancer institute.

The new machine was set up at the hospital with the support of experts from Tata TrustsMumb­ai and their officers too were present on the occasion, he added.

Although Special Protection Group personnel reportedly did not allow Sonia Gandhi to meet patients or their attendants, she did enquire about the patients and the cancer centre from the doctors and officials.

Later, Sonia Gandhi chaired a meeting of the KNMH management committee, besides planting a sapling in the hospital premises.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi arrived at the hospital later and joined the UPA chairperso­n on the occasion.

Earlier, Sonia Gandhi arrived at Bamrauli airport here at 9.45am by a chartered plane from Delhi and proceeded for Swaraj Bhawan.

She took a round of Anand Bhawan and Swaraj Bhawan till 1.45 pm, met officials and staff of Anand Bhawan, planetariu­m and Swaraj Bhawan, besides reviewing their functionin­g.
