AMU students’ union polls today
ALIGARH With formal campaigning for the Aligarh Muslim University students’ union (AMUSU) elections concluding on Thursday, candidates tried to woo voters through door-to-door campaigning on Friday. University officials said elaborate arrangements were in place to ensure smooth polling, vote counting and result declaration on Saturday.
“All due arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of polling. The faculty members will look after the elections for the academic session 2018-19,” said chief election officer Prof Zaheeruddin.
Five candidates each are in fray for the posts of president and vice-president, while four are vying for secretaryship and 28 for the 10 cabinet seats. Polling, through ballot paper, will begin at 9 am and continue till 5 pm. Officials said counting would start at around 7 pm and was expected to continue till late night.
Earlier on Thursday, candidates made a last attempt to sway large crowds of students in their favour with their final speeches, a tradition at AMU.
Attired in sherwanis and other formal wear, candidates spoke from the terrace of the union hall, outlining their priorities and discussing burning issues in the presence of proctors and deans of faculty. The speeches continued till late evening.
Candidates competing for the Women’s College Students’ Union (WCSU) elections, which are being held on a similar schedule, also made their final speeches on the day. Prof Hina Parvez is the chief election officer for the WCSU polls.
The process for electing the new student union rolled out on October 23 with the display of the voters’ list and corrections taking place till October 24, after which the final list was put out. The nominations began on October 25, which were followed by scrutiny on October 26 and withdrawals on October 27, thus paving the way for the final list of 42 aspirants.
