LUCKNOW : Customs officials seized around 4.66 kg of gold worth ₹ 1. 51 crore hidden inside two steam irons of a passenger who landed at Amausi airport from Dubai on Friday evening. The passenger was arrested and is being further quizzed .

Deputy commissioner (customs) at Amausi airport, Niharika Lakha said the arrested man was identified as Shambu Chauhan of Deoria who worked as a labourer in a Dubai firm.

She said the man was apparently a carrier and he was approached by some unknown people who were part of the international gold smuggling nexus, at his work place after coming to know that he was planning to return home.

She said Chauhan was persuaded to carry two steam irons to Lucknow and hand them over to some other unknown people after moving out of the airport. She said Chauhan was offered money and his air tickets were also arranged by the gold smugglers. The official said the smugglers had hidden the gold inside the irons by moulding it in the shape of filament plate.

She said Chauhan was not even aware to whom he had to hand over the irons and was told in Dubai the people concerned would themselves identify him when he reached Lucknow.

She said they apparently escaped after spotting Chauhan beingarrested. Shesaidanother one time carrier was arrested
