LUCKNOW: The students of Mahamaya Rajkiya Allopathic Medical College, Ambedkar Nagar, allegedly set afire four SUVs of BJP MLA from Tanda Sanju Devi following a clash with the legislator’s supporters on Tuesday night, police said.

The two groups came face to face after Sanju Devi’s supporters created ruckus over delay in providing ambulance facility to her mother-in-law, they added.

Superintendent of police (SP), Ambedkar Nagar, Vipin Kumar Mishra said the MLA’s supporters and a few other students had been taken into custody. “The situation is under control and a probe has been ordered into the matter,” he added.

A police officer, who did not wish to be named, said an FIR had been lodged by college principal PK Singh at Aliganj police station against two dozen people, including the MLA’s representative, and at least a dozen people had been taken into custody.

Another FIR was lodged against the MLA’s supporters by medical college employees who were injured in the clash.

“Police force has been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident,” he added. The officer said Sanju Devi had brought her ailing motherin-law to the hospital for treatment. “Since the patient’s condition was critical, doctors referred her to super-specialty hospital in Lucknow. The MLA’s supporters requested the medical college administration to provide ambulance to shift the patient to Lucknow. However, when they were not provided ambulance even after two hours, they created ruckus,” he added.

“In the FIR, the college principal has claimed that the MLA’s representative Shyam Babu and other supporters reached his residence and that of the chief medical superintendent and held them captive at gun-point,” he said. As the news of the ruckus spread, a large number of medical college students staying in the hostel assembled at the spot to challenge the MLA’s supporters.
