LUCKNOW: Now, no surgeries would be postponed at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) due to non-availability of beds in the post operative unit here, said Prof SP Ambesh of department of anesthesia.

“Earlier, 15% surgeries had to be deferred due to non-availability of beds in the post operative unit. There were only 18 beds here but now 10 more would be added to the unit by January 2019. This means, the number of beds would go up to 28 and all these would be equipped with life support system machines,” he said.

After every surgery, patients are kept here for some time before being shifted to any ward.

These hours are very crucial for the survival of patients, emphasised Ambesh.

“The post operative unit of PMSSY building is also operational. This unit was closed due to shortage of resident doctors for the last two months,” he added.

SGPGI provides international standard post operative care, he said.

“As soon as the surgery is over, the surgeon goes back to his room. From here, the role of post operative staff begins – as soon as the patient is moved to a recovery room, he comes under the observation of a post-operative doctor. Some patients feel sleepy when they come out of the effect of anesthesia, some also feel nauseated while others may complain of pain… all this has to be managed,” said Ambesh.

Once in the post operative room, doctors monitor the blood pressure, breathing, temperature, and pulse of the patient regularly.

They ask patients to take deep breath to assess their lung function.

The doctors check the surgical area for signs of bleeding or infection regularly as anesthesia can cause an allergic reaction in some people, said Ambesh.

Once the patient is stable, he is moved to the ward or his room, he added.
