Wall art to promote culture, cleanlines­s

LUCKNOW:Wall paintings will now be used as a tool to showcase the culture and tradition of the city and promote the message of sanitation and cleanlines­s by the Lucknow Municipal Corporatio­n (LMC).

Through paintings, the effort was to pass on the message of sanitation, Kumbh, clean and green city, etc, said Ram Ratan, 47, an artist who is painting the walls across Shaheed Path near Arjunganj. He hails from Jaipur and has been painting walls since past 30 years. He said, “The artists from different cities are working on this project, like Kamla Singh, 38, from Varanasi and Manoj Singh, 40, from Muzaffarna­gar.”

All these artists have been painting walls in different cities of Haryana and Punjab. Ram Ratan added, “The theme is given by the LMC officials and district administra­tion and we work accordingl­y.” Rakesh Tewari, another artist from Mumbai, said, “The municipal corporatio­n pays us on daily basis for our work. Besides, they are also paying for our accommodat­ion, food and transporta­tion expenses.”

He added, “Paintings have the potential to change the way city looks and it can give a new dimension to the life of the denizens as they get to see beautiful art work around them. Azaad Kapoor, 22 and Brijesh, 21, art students from Varanasi, said, “It’s a great opportunit­y to learn and earn for students like us and that’s why we chose to work here.”
