INMATE OF CHILD HOME DIES

LUCKNOW: A 15-year-old mentally retarded inmate of a child home for girls in Motinagar, Lucknow, died on Sunday morning. The girl was first brought to the shelter home on January 8, after she was discharged from the King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. District probation officer (DPO) Sudhakar Pandey said she was rescued from Balrampur on December 8, last year. The officer said the girl was receiving treatment as she was mentally retarded. “Her medical reports didn’t indicate any type of external damage to the body. She was weak and in a semi-conscious state for many days,” he added.

District probation officer (DPO) Sudhakar Pandey said she was rescued from Balrampur on December 8, last year. “She was in a bad condition at the time of her rescue by authoritie­s in Balrampur. She was admitted in a local hospital before being referred to the KGMU,” he said.

The officer said the girl was receiving treatment as she was mentally retarded. “Her medical reports didn’t indicate any type of external damage to the body. She was weak and in a semi-conscious state for many days,” he added.

According to the girl’s medical record, on January 18, she was visited by a doctor for the last time. “The doctor was continuing the treatment prescribed by the KGMU. The girl was not in a good condition but she was recovering gradually,” said another official.

A shelter home staffer said that on Sunday morning, her health took a turn for the worse.

“She was taken to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. The body was sent for postmortem examinatio­n,” said Vishavjeet Singh, inspector, Naka police station.

Pandey said that a judicial probe into the matter would ascertain the cause of her death.

ALREADY BATTLING CONTROVERS­Y

The child home for girls in Motinagar was only recently in news when two girls escaped from there within a span of 15 days, and by using a similar route. On December 22, a 15-year-old girl and on January 5, a 12-year-old girl scaled the home’s 14-foothigh wall and escaped. The field office of the department of women and child developmen­t had recommende­d action against the child home superinten­dent and three others. However, the department directorat­e is yet to respond to the recommenda­tion.
