Folk songs, classical dances to welcome NRI guests

VARANASI: Non Resident Indians (NRIs) who have come here for the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas convention will get a chance to enjoy semi-classical songs like Chaiti, Kajri, and Hori at Swatantra Bhawan of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Monday.

“Students of department of music of faculty of performing arts, BHU, will present folk numbers and apprise the NRI guests of rich cultural heritage and music of Banaras gharana,” said Prof Sangita Pandit.

“The students will also be presenting Bharatnaty­am and Kathak. They will also get a chance to listen to semi-classical music Thumri,” she added.

She further said the NRI guests, as soon as they enter the campus, will have a feel of rich cultural heritage and diversity of India as the students would perform the popular dances of different regions to welcome the guests. “At every intersecti­on from where the cavalcade of NRI guests is scheduled to pass, there will be a cultural event,” she said.

Prof K Shashi Kumar of the department will present ‘Ganga Stuti’. ‘Vande Mataram’ will also be presented.

On Monday afternoon, the NRIs will participat­e in a discussion with the students on various issues such as digital India, what role NRIs may play in the making of New India.

They will have dinner with UP minister Chetan Chauhan.
