Justice (retd) Palok Basu passes away
PRAYAGRAJ : Justice (retd) Palok Basu, a crusader of out-of-court settlement in the Ramjanam Bhoomi-Babri Masjid case, passed away on February 5. He was 79. Incidentally, it was also his birthday. Justice Basu started his legal career as an advocate in Allahabad high court in 1962 and retired as a senior judge from here in February 2002 following which he was appointed as the president of UP State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.
LUCKNOW: Justice Palok Basu, crusader of out-of-court settlement, in the Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid case, passed away on February 5, which incidentally, happened to be his 79th birthday.
Justice Basu started his legal career as an advocate in the Allahabad High Court in 1962.
He retired as a senior judge of the Allahabad High Court in February 2002, following which he was appointed as the president of the UP State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. He rendered some landmark judgements which had far-reaching consequences.
Apart from his illustrious legal career, he had a keen interest in pursuing theatre. He was an accomplished artiste in All India Radio and an actor par excellence. He authored several books on law and human rights.
Perhaps his most significant contribution to the nation was his constant endeavour to forge an out-ofcourt settlement in the Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.
He was successful in uniting both communities for an amicable solution. Because of his efforts, the Supreme Court recognised that an outof-court settlement would be to the advantage of all. He was a great humanist and was deeply associated with several social and philanthropic institutions including Ramkrishna Mission. Since 2012, he had been practising in the supreme court as a senior advocate.
