MUZAFFARNAGAR/MEERUT: At least 15 students, including four girls, of a madarsa sustained burn injuries following a blast in the compressor of a refrigerator in Sujdue village of Muzaffarnagar on Thursday night.
Mohammad Arif, maulvi of Madarsa Jamia Arabia Ashraful, said the blaze started from a candle kept in a room in the madrasa during a power cut.
“All the victims were aged between 6 and 14 years.
They were admitted to Muzaffarnagar district hospital from where 11 of them were referred to Meeeut Medical College for treatment,” he added. Chief medical surgeon, Meerut Medical College Hospital, Dr Harshwardhan said the students were brought to the hospital at around 2 am on Friday.
“Most of them have 10-30 per cent burns. Only three of them have 20-30 per cent injuries. They have been kept under observation,” he added.
According to Arif, power supply was disrupted due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm on Thursday night after which the students had lit a candle in the room.
“At about 11 pm, while the students were sleeping, an old refrigerator kept in the room caught fire from the candle which led to a blast in its compressor,” he added. He said other inmates of the madarsa and villagers broke the doors and took the students to the district hospital.
Arif said the 11 children who were referred to Meerut included Arif (10), Sameer (14), Farman (9), Rehan (7), Aaris (10), Azeem (12), Intezaar (12), Imtiaz (13), Sonam (12), Shajna (10), and Muskan (13).
Four others – Sabir, Shahrukh, Shavez and Mudassir – were discharged from the hospital after being given first aid.
One of the victims, Shahrukh, 10, said: “The fire caused suffocation in the room. We were rescued by the villagers and other inmates of the madarsa.”
