‘Newer methods treated more patients’

LUCKNOW: Introducin­g new methods reduced the hospital stay time among patients and thereby helped increase the number of operations conducted with same resources in the department of general surgery at the King George’s Medical University.

hospital stay of the patients. What used to be week long stay is now 24 or 48 hour stay.”

He said when patient gets discharged early the other one is admitted and operated upon hence the number went up.

In 2016-17 50445 patients were seen in OPD and in 2017-18 there were 54299 patients while in 2018-19 there were 65737 patients. Similarly in 2016-17 there were 4381 major operations and in 2017-18 there were 4446 major operations and in 2018-19 there were 4450 operations.

“This just shows the department is consistent­ly receiving and treating patients with the same infrastruc­ture. This is because there is hardly any space now to expand,” said Prof Sonkar. The department is going to celebrate 107th foundation day on February 16.

Dr Arshad Ahmad and Dr Avnish of the department said that during the foundation day celebratio­ns medical education programme will be conducted in which experts from different parts of the country will address participan­ts on various surgical topics. “The topics have been chosen according to the need of the young doctors,” said Dr Suresh Kumar. Lectures will be conducted for about a week in which at least two dozen experts will interact with participat­ing doctors.
