LUCKNOW: The state’s first electric bus was flagged off by urban development minister Suresh Khanna and Lucknow Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia at a function held on the road in front of the Vidhan Bhawan here on Sunday.

The bus will run between Alambagh and Viraj Khand for this entire month and in the next three months, 39 more buses will be introduced under Lucknow City Transport Service to ferry passengers on different routes.

“Introduction of electric buses was delayed by a couple of months and for this the bus provider was imposed penalty also but finally they are here,” said Ajit Singh, joint director, urban transport directorate. He said in the coming months 580 more electric buses would be introduced in different cities of Uttar Pradesh, once cabinet approval was obtained.

Urban development minister Suresh Khanna said these buses would reduce pollution as they were run on rechargeable batteries. Once charged, the bus runs 150-kilometre with air conditioners in full seating capacity.

With a non-polluting, 9-metre long body, fitted with GPS and CCTV cameras, the electric bus can be located via app and the interiors are designed for a comfortable ride. The batteries are fitted on the rooftop to avoid breakdown during water logging.

“If there are any issues, they will be addressed in the buses that are to be launched in the coming months,” said officials.

The fare will be between ₹15 to ₹45. The air cooled buses have 31 seats and a capacity to carry 50 passengers at a time. The buses also have air suspension for a jerk-free ride and the power is enough for a smooth ride even on congested roads.
