Sharma top draw at PGTI tourney
NEW DELHI : With Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points being awarded to Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) events since the start of the 2019 season, world No 118 Shubhankar Sharma will be the highestranked player at this week’s PGTI Players Championship, which gets underway from Tuesday at the Classic Golf and Country Club in Mewat, Haryana.
Shubhankar will be appearing on home soil for the first time since the Hero Indian Open in March last, and this week will allow both preparation and rest for the 22-year-old before he embarks on a prolonged run on the European Tour, where he won twice last season. It was nothing short of a dream year as he became the youngest Indian to win the European Tour’s Rookie of the Year and bagged the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.
The Players Championship is the season’s second event after Golconda Masters, and carries a prize of ~30 lakh, besides world ranking points for the top-five.
Shubhankar is scheduled to tee off with M Dharma and Priyanshu Singh, both of whom had start finishes in Hyderabad. Other prominent names this week are Shamim Khan and Rashid Khan, both PGTI Order of Merit winners, besides Honey Baisoya, Mukesh Kumar and Om Prakash Chouhan.
