Protest intensifies, SP-BSP leaders submit memo to Guv
LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party (SP) intensified its protest here on Wednesday against the denial of permission to party chief Akhilesh Yadav from visiting Prayagraj on Tuesday.
Party workers held demonstrations and took out a protest march in Prayagraj and several other cities during the day. A delegation of the SP and its ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) later met governor Ram Naik at Raj Bhavan here and submitted a memorandum, demanding that the cases lodged against their workers after they clashed with the police in Prayagraj on Tuesday be taken back.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has already condemned the Yogi government over the action and called it a conspiracy to thwart their political movement across the state. Carrying placards, banners and raising slogans against the BJP government hundreds of SP workers, who had gathered at the party headquarters here on Vikramaditya Marg, marched in a procession towards the busy Hazratganj crossing. The district administration had invoked Section 144 of the CrPC that prevents gathering of more than four people at a place, but the move had no effect on the angry SP workers. They gathered near the Ambedkar statue at Hazratganj crossing at around 1pm. The stir threw the traffic out of gear.
Later, the protestors gathered in front of Raj Bhavan and shouted slogans, alleging law and order in the state had collapsed. They demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state.
FOUR FIRS LODGED
At least four FIRs have been lodged at Colonelganj, Civil Lines and Georgetown police stations against Samajwadi Party leaders and workers, including injured MP from Badaun Dharmendra Yadav, for damaging public property, arson and attacking cops under different sections of IPC.
