ALIGARH: While students gathered at the Bab-e-Syed gate of AMU on Wednesday to protest against sedition charges, the university teachers’ union (AMUTA) also objected to the severe charges against the 14 students.

“The AMU Teachers’ Association, in its urgent executive committee meeting, condemned Tuesday’s incident on the campus. It appears an attempt to disturb the peaceful and conducive atmosphere of the university campus,” stated Nazrul Islam, honorary secretary, AMUTA.

“AMUTA strongly opposes severe charges like sedition against AMU students. We request the President of India and visitor of AMU to take suo motu cognizance and send a strong message that sedition charges should be invoked only after thorough inquiry and not on hearsay within a few hours of the alleged incident,” read out the resolution passed by AMUTA and forwarded to President of India.

Earlier in the day, AMU students boycotted classes and staged a protest at the Bab-eSyed Gate of the university to raise their voice against sedition charges against 14 accused. Girl students from nearby hostels also joined in.

In wake of chaos on the campus, the much awaited visit by noted AMU alumnus Frank Islam was postponed. New additions at the mass communication department of AMU were to be inaugurated by him on Wednesday, but the event was postponed till further notice.
