Delhi beat SAI to bag girls handball crown

LUCKNOW:Last year’s runner-up Delhi defeated defending champions Sports Authority of India 22-18 to win the 35th National Sub-Junior Girls Handball Championsh­ip, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Wednesday.

With the two teams locked in 10-all at the break, a prediction about winner almost looked difficult. But after a change in the ends, Delhi girls first stretched their lead to 12-11, and then there was no looking back for them.

Harshit scored highest six goals, followed by Khushboo (4) and Asanga (3). Pooja struck five goals for SAI, whereas Beant, Manpreet and Tanu shared nine goals between them.

Himachal Pradesh and Haryana finished joint third, whereas hosts Uttar Pradesh stood a poor seventh, defeating Gujarat by 13-12.

NITIN EXCELS

Nitin Pal of the Guru Govind Singh Sports College staged a fine show at the Under-14 School National Athletics Championsh­ip, bagging a silver medal in long jump event with a jump of 6.60 metre. On Wednesday, Nitin was felicitate­d by college’s acting principal Vijay Kumar Gupta and his coach Shailendra Pratap Singh.

DISTRICT BASKETBALL

St Xavier’s scored a convincing 60-33 win against KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium team to win the District Basketball Tournament, at the Chowk Stadium here on Wednesday.

Playing true to their reputation, St Xavier’s cagers continued to dominate the rivals through the match.

Lanky Rudra ran like a welloiled machine and scored highest 40 points for the winners. Shivam scored 12 points for the losers.

Earlier in the semi-finals, KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium team beat hosts Chowk Stadium B by 51-26, wheras St Xavier’s outplayed Chowk Stadium A by 39-18.
