LUCKNOW: An abandoned newborn girl child was rescued from a park in Ambar Khera village in Mal, Lucknow on Thursday morning. The infant was found in a bag hanging from a tree in the park.

Locals heard the infant crying and informed Childline and the police.

They rescued the girl and took her to the nearest hospital and then to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her healthy and permitted her to be taken to a child home.

Meanwhile, cops were probing the matter and trying to identify the culprits.

“We will take the help of CCTV cameras, besides scanning records of hospitals,” said a police official.

This was the fourth such incident in Lucknow this year.

In 10 years, 153 abandoned infants, including 103 girls, were rescued by different agencies, stated a report of Childline.

Childline representative Ajit Kushwaha said, “There are 3-4 such cases every week in Lucknow. In some cases, infants had to brave the cold and dirt as they are usually dumped on the roadside, in isolated places.”

However, the government has time and again said that it had been working on various

projects to strengthen women and save the girl child. “Not only girls are abandoned, there are male children too. So we assume they are the parents who do not want these infants,” said Brijender Singh, a

Women and Child Development department official, adding, “We have put more than 200 cradles at several places across the state but still we hear the news about infants getting abandoned on roadsides.”
