KGMU plans centralised system for ventilator beds ON CARDS

Anaesthesia dept may be given overall charge of OTs in trauma centre

-

LUCKNOW : The ventilator beds and operating theatres at the trauma centre in King George’s Medical University will be under a ‘centralised system’ for better utilisation of resources, as per a decision by the hospital advisory committee of the medical university.

As per the minutes of the meeting the chairman of the committee stated that there is variable OT utilization by different departments and if the control is centralised, utilisation can be increased and pendency of cases reduced.

It was proposed that the department of anaesthesia be given overall charge of the OTs to allot cases on priority basis and the same was approved.

At present orthopaedic, neuro-surgery, urology, trauma surgery and general surgery have OTs under them.

Doctors from one department come to OT of another department but only when they are called for some specific operation or for help.

For centralised allotment of ventilator beds, the committee decided that a policy be developed in collaboration with the chief medical superintendent of the King George’s Medical University, medical superintendent and chief medical superintendent of the trauma centre.

Some of the faculty members, however, raised doubt over the impact of such an arrangement.

They said that at present, all OTs were supervised by different departments and they remained occupied almost the entire day and even night.

If the charge went to one department, even slightest mistake in coordination would not

only delay operations but also affect patients.

“Centralising OT control might harm the patients,” said a faculty member.

He said that as far as the number of operations was concerned, the OTs were used round the clock.

“Instead, if the workforce is increased and a check mechanism is developed to make sure patients who can be treated at periphery hospital do not have to travel till trauma centre, it will definitely improve the situation ,” said the faculty member.
