AGRA:At least seven people were killed and six others injured after a speeding ambulance collided with a divider and then rammed into a car on Yamuna Expressway near Mathura on Tuesday. Local officials said the accident took place at “Milestone 138-139” near Sukhdev Burj village in Mathura district early on Tuesday morning.

The driver of the ambulance, which officials allege was speeding, and an eight-year-old girl were among those killed.

“The ambulance was travelling from Jammu to Patna and was carrying a dead body. The driver of the ambulance Hari Singh from Jammu was killed in the crash,” said SP Sharma, incharge of Baldev police station in Mathura district.

“The exact reason for the crash is yet to be worked out, but we fear that driver of the ambulance might have fallen asleep at the wheel at about 7am on Tuesday sending the vehicle crashing into divider. The ambulance landed on other side of divider, colliding with the car,” Sharma said.

Local officials said the accident was so severe that all seven — four men, two women and an eight year old girl — were killed on the spot. An investigation into the matter is underway, he said.“Those in car on other side of divider were travelling from Tundla town in Firozabad district to Delhi when their car was rammed by the ambulance. Saroj Devi, 67, who was in the car, died on the spot,” said Sharma. “The family members of those coming from Tundla have arrived while those related to the people in the ambulance are yet to turn up. Half a dozen people who were injured have been admitted to different hospitals including those in Agra,” Sharma said.
