Meerut girls storm into semis with 5-0 win over Kanpur girls

LUCKNOW: Spirited Meerut outplayed Kanpur 5-0 to make it to the semi-finals of the State Junior Girls Hockey Tournament, at the Padma Shri Mohd Shahid Stadium here on Tuesday.

Once Mansi opened the account for the winners in the 15th minute, Kazal, Neeshu, Tanu and Sonam scored a goal each to complete the formality.

Favourites Lucknow Hostel have already made it to the semifinals from Pool A.

Earlier, hosts Lucknow notched up a convincing 5-1 win against Varanasi to collect full points. Nazia Bano scored a brace, whereas Garima, Rishi Rathore and Sakshi Shukla shared three goals between them. The only goal for Varanasi was scored by Priyanka Pal in the 45th minute.

In other matches of the day, Bareilly defeated Azamgarh 2-1, Prayagraj beat Chitrakoot Dham 7-0, Kanpur and Bareilly split points playing a goalless draw, whereas the match between Gorakhpur Sports College and Moradabad also ended in a 2-2 draw.

ADITYA SHINES

Aditya Kumar bowled a deadly spell to take 5/12, whereas Abhishek Singh took 3/36 as Lucknow Cricket Hostel defeated St Anjani’s Cricket Club by 142 runs in a D division league match, at the Pt Raas Bihari Tewari Stadium here on Tuesday. SACC could score 49/9 in 11.4 overs while chasing 192 in 40 overs. Abhishek also scored highest 41 for the winners.

HANDBALL TEAM

Army’s Krishna would lead Uttar Pradesh in the 47th Senior National Men’s Handball Championsh­ip, scheduled to be held from February 23 to 28 in Tamil Nadu.

Other members of the team include, Raju Thakur, Akash Gupta, Ranjan, Anand Pandey, Shiva, Sanchit, Haseen Khan, Saurabh, Ankit Srivastava, Rahul Dubey, Aditay Nath Yadav, Akshay Chaudhary, Mohit Kumar, Abdul Karim and Rajkishore Yadav.

SANU BAGS BRONZE

Sanu Giri of Uttar Pradesh won a bronze medal on the opening day of the 16th National Youth Athletics at Raipur on Tuesday.

A closer finish was to be found in the boys high jump competitio­n with Vijay Malik of Delhi, Sanu Giri of Uttar Pradesh and Robindeep Singh Sran of Punjab all clearing a height of 2.01m.

With three athletes jumping identical heights, the gold medal was awarded to Malik on the basis of fewest failed jumps. Giri and Sran took silver and third place respective­ly.
