Deepak Pandey cremated, dy CM hands over ₹25 lakh

KANPUR : The mortal remains of corporal Deepak Pandey were consigned to the flames at the Siddhnath Ghat in Jajmau, here, on Friday morning, with full military honours.

Corporal Deepak Pandey was killed in Badgam, Srinagar, on Wednesday, when the army helicopter crashed. His body was brought here late on Thursday evening and was taken to the Air Force hospital from where it was brought to his house in Mangla Vihar in Chakeri in a flower-decked truck.

Throughout the journey from Chakeri Airport to the hospital and from there to his house, people showered petals on the army van carrying the mortal remains.

Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya arrived to console family members and attended the funeral at Siddhnth Ghat. He also handed over a cheque for Rs 25 lakh to the corporal’s father, Ram Prasad Pandey as a token of respect to him by the UP Government.

Besides, Uttar Pradesh minister Satish Mahana, mayor Pramila Pandey, MP MM Joshi, MP Devendra Bhole, MLA Amitabh Bajpai, ADG zone Prem Prakash, IG Kanpur Alok Singh and a large number of citizens from different walks of life were present at the funeral.

A flower seller, Ajay, when came to know that people were buying flowers and garlands in huge quantity for offering floral tribute to Pandey, stood up with folded hands and refused to take money.

He gave away the flowers free of cost.
