Schools to help in registering students’ guardians as voters

LUCKNOW : The district administration has directed all the schools in the state capital to check whether parents/guardians of the students are voters or not and if they know the respective booths where they are supposed to cast their vote.

The step is aimed at increasing the polling percentage in the Lok Sabha election.

After all the information is collected from schools, all parents, guardians and students’ other family members, who are not voters, will be registered by asking them to fill in form 6 through the booth level officers (BLOs).

Lucknow district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said this exercise was part of ‘the know your vote and know your booth’ campaign being carried out in the district.

“Generally it has been seen that on polling day, people say their name was not found on the voter list. Some may have the Election Commission identity cards, but their name might not be on the voter list. This exercise done by schools will eliminate that possibility to a large extent,” said the Lucknow DM.

“If parents don’t know their booth or their name is not there on the voter list, they can check on www.nvsp.in or can ask on 1950 helpline. Parents may also speak to BLOs,” he said.

The district administration is also distributing yellow slips for the same purpose.

It has the name of the booth and the serial number of all family members on their voter list. If any family/household does not get this yellow slip, he should call 1950 helpline (operational between 9am and 5pm), he said.

Students of government and private schools will join hands to encourage voters to exercise their franchise by forming a 30-km human chain on the streets of Lucknow ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The office of the district inspector of schools (DIoS) in Lucknow has prepared an elaborate plan as the human chain will require thousands of students.

The date of the campaign has not been decided yet. It would largely depend on when Lucknow will go to polls.

“The human chain will cover Shaheed Path, Chinhat, Polytechnic crossing, Munshi Pulia, Madiyaon, Puraniya Crossing, Khadra, Bada Imambada, Chowk, Thakurganj, Balaganj, Alamnagar, Buddheshwar, Kanpur Bypass, Krishna Nagar and Amausi,” said district inspector of schools Mukesh Kumar Singh.
