More than 500 players for soft tennis nationals
LUCKNOW : Hosts Uttar Pradesh would start favourites at the 16th Senior National Soft Tennis Championship, beginning Wednesday, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here. Almost all the Indian players, who had represented India at the Asian Games at Jakarta/Palembang, are expected to be seen in action here.
Uttar Pradesh, who had two gold and a bronze medal at the last nationals, would be among 24 teams participating in the fiveday championship, being organized first time in the state capital. Other participating teams include, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Tripura and Manipur.
“We are expecting good matches here as almost all the top rung players on the domestic circuit have confirmed their participation,” said organizing secretary, Deepak Chawla. They include, Shiv Gulati, Ada Tiwari, Jay Meena, Rohit Kumar, Aniket, Kamlesh Shukla, Namita Seth.

PIYUSH SHINES
Piyush Kusumwal’s all-round show (3 wkts, 56 runs) helped TCC beat Champions League by 28 runs in a league match of the 1st Harish Chandra Goel Memorial Tournament, at the Aryavart Ground here on Monday. TCC scored 157 in 31.5 overs while batting first after winning the toss, and then got the rivals out for 129 in 29 overs. Yash Chaudhary took 4/20, whereas Amit Nishad had 2/18.

As many as 12 powerlifters from Uttar Pradesh were selected in the Indian squad for the World Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Championship, scheduled to be held at Tokyo from May 18 to 25. They are: Ikara bano, Manisha Sharma, Mohini, Nidhi Singh, Ashma, Kiran, Deeksha Sharma, Parul Kumar, Mohit Kumar, Mohit Srivastava, Sukhvinder Singh and Akash Tyagi.
